Au Soudan, le conflit qui a éclaté le 15 avril 2023 a des conséquences dévastatrices pour la population civile. Il a fait des milliers de morts et de blessés parmi les civil·e·s, et des millions de personnes ont été déplacées, faisant du Soudan le théâtre de la plus grande crise au monde en matière de déplacements de population. Les deux parties au conflit, les Forces armées soudanaises et les Forces d’appui rapide (FAR), se livrent à toute une série de violations du droit international relatif aux droits humains et du droit international humanitaire. Les deux groupes se servent de la répression pour maintenir leur contrôle politique et économique, tout en restreignant l’espace civique en vue de consolider leur pouvoir.

Mohammed Farouk Salman Mahmoud est un militant politique soudanais, qui promeut la justice transitionnelle. Il s’est installé aux Émirats arabes unis début 2023. Il avait été interpellé et détenu par les autorités soudanaises en janvier 2018 pour avoir activement participé aux manifestations pacifiques qui avaient débouché sur la chute de l’ancien président Omar el Béchir.

Amnesty International n'a cessé de dénoncer la pratique de longue date des arrestations illégales, des disparitions forcées et des détentions arbitraires qui ont lieu aux Émirats arabes unis.

Sudanese political activist detained in UAE

Mohammed Farouk Salman Mahmoud is a Sudanese political activist and transitional justice advocate who has been detained in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) since 19 January 2025. He moved to the UAE in early 2023. On 19 January 2025, while at Dubai Airport preparing to board a flight out of the UAE, he was arrested by Emirati security officials and taken to his house where they searched his belongings and confiscated his devices before detaining him at an undisclosed location. At the time of his detention, he was recovering from a major surgical procedure, raising significant concerns regarding his health and well-being. In April 2025, the UAE authorities claimed he was being investigated for insulting the head of the UAE state. He is currently detained at the Al Sadr Prison in Abu Dhabi. Amnesty International urges the UAE authorities to immediately and unconditionally release Mohammed Farouk Salman Mahmoud.

The Sudan conflict that erupted on 15 April 2023 is having a devastating impact on civilians. Thousands of civilians have been killed and injured, and millions have been displaced making Sudan the largest displacement crisis in the world. Both parties to the conflict, the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have committed various violations of international humanitarian law and international human rights law. Both groups are also using repression to maintain political and economic control and consolidate their power while restricting civic space.

Mohammed Farouk Salman Mahmoud is a Sudanese political activist and transitional justice advocate. He moved to the UAE in early 2023. He was previously arrested and detained by the Sudanese authorities in January 2018 for actively participating in the peaceful protests that eventually led to the removal of former president Omar al-Bashir from power.

Amnesty International has consistently documented a long history of unlawful arrests, enforced disappearances, and arbitrary detentions in UAE.
